A Walk on the Boardwalk

We had another beautiful day today with temperatures reaching 28c with a nice gentle breeze.  We decided to take in a local activity.  Summerside has a great boardwalk that goes for about 9 kilometers.  It’s a walkway that is actually made out of boards.  It also has a paved bike lane beside it. It goes along the water and through a nature park.  We thought the dogs might enjoy a walk and we could certainly use the exercise.  Living in a motor home, you tend to do a lot of sitting.

As we headed off on our walk, you could tell Jasper and Bailey were really happy with the outing.  They were eager to get going and had a real bounce in their step.  We took water and a collapsible bowl with us for the boys for when they became thirsty.

Along the way we found fitness equipment that the city had set up so you could work out among a pretty setting.  They had a rowing machine, an elliptical machine, an upper strengthening machine etc. spaced out along the boardwalk.  They also had nice washrooms with solar panels.  I guess the solar panels were for the lights for night time walks.  They also had covered rest stations along the way with benches and a picnic table.  The city had put a lot of thought into the walking path.  It was very well done.

When we walked along the nature walk, we came upon a sign that said “We don’t mind if you feed us”.  Usually they don’t want you to feed the animals so this was a bit of a surprise to us.  Then we saw the cutest chipmunk eating out of the box.  Someone had filled the box with birdseed and sunflower seeds.  He was quite content eating seed after seed as we stopped to watch.  He didn’t even mind having his picture taken.  He was sitting at the back of the box and when he saw we were taking a picture he quickly scurried to the front of the box and posed for us.  He was really cute!

Along our walk, we made sure we stopped several times to offer Jasper and Bailey water.  Bailey drank a lot while Jasper wasn’t too interested in the water.  There were just too many things around him that were too interesting.

On our way back to the car we could tell Jasper and Bailey were starting to slow down a bit.  We got about two thirds of the way back to the car when the slowing dogs came to a grinding halt.  We tried to tug gently on the leashes while saying “come on, let’s go”.  Bailey just looked up at us as if to say “Are you kidding me?  I’m done!”  We ended up carrying Jasper and Bailey the rest of the way back to the car.

After we got back to the car, we decided to celebrate our walk by getting an ice cream cone.  The ice cream here in PEI is different from back home.  They don’t make it with ice milk, they make it with real cream.  It is delicious!!  Jasper and Bailey really like it too!
